Leather Office Chairs and Productivity

Posted By Chuck on March 30, 2010

It’s a well known fact that the quality of the surrounding environment is a large determining factor in the happiness and productivity of office staff.  Think about all the offices that feature cold, hard plastic chairs for people to sit in all day.  There’s no doubt that such uncomfortable circumstances negatively affect the productivity of the office.  When this negativity affects the quality of the work, it also affects the happiness of the people running the office!

So what does that mean for the person buying the office furniture?  Quite simply, it means that you should invest a little more money in quality, long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing furniture.  While it may cost you a little more in the short term, a leather chair will last quite a long time, making the investment pay for itself in fairly short order.

Another sub par option for office furniture is fabric chairs.  While these are quite a bit more comfortable than the aforementioned plastic chairs, fabric furniture still doesn’t represent a great investment.  The fabric will show wear and tear, easily picking up stains and other soils.  When the fabric becomes ripped and torn, the furniture will quickly go from a nice conversation piece to a nasty looking eye sore. Leather, on the other hand, won’t do this.  It’s very hard to damage leather office chairs unless you really try.  The material generally ages really well, becoming even more comfortable and beautiful over time.  Unlike with other materials, the color won’t fade in random spots, but rather it will change in a smooth gradient, retaining the attractive qualities that initially drew you to the furniture in the first place.

You may be thinking to yourself that buying a leather armchair is overkill for the work environment, but this couldn’t be farther from the truth.  Your employees will love the fact that you looked out for their comfort by purchasing quality products for them to use during the work week, and their productivity will shoot up quite a bit if they can benefit from the comfort and style that leather furniture brings.

So there you have it, just a few of the compelling reasons why leather office furniture is a great investment.  Your employees will be happier and more productive, and you will have purchased something that gets better with age rather than breaking down and becoming ugly.  You’ll thank yourself down the line when you realize how much money you saved in repair and reupholstery fees.

Leather Chairs: Sophistication and Comfort

A leather chair is far from being just a practical purchase.  This type of furniture, in general, is an investment not only in increasing the style and comfort in your home or office, but it’s also an investment in sophistication.

For instance, you can get a leather chair and ottoman which features contrast stitching.  This combination of features creates an aesthetically pleasing fixture in any living room, making it not only a great investment in quality but also a wonderful conversation piece.  What better way to impress visiting friends and family than a beautifully crafted piece of furniture!

An Example of How Well Leather Can Accent A Room

In addition to the conversational and aesthetic value of leather chairs, there’s quite a bit to be gained in terms of sheer comfort as well.  Depending on the type of leather used in your chair, you can experience anything from “so soft you’ll sink completely in” to half soft and half firm.  Different people will naturally have different preferences in terms of firmness, so be sure to do your due diligence and thoroughly research the available products.

Another thing to consider is the color of your leather recliner.  There are brown leather chairs, black leather chairs, etc.  Just about any color combination you can think of is available, so do yourself and your home a favor and take your time making the decision to buy.  If you have a dark colored room, there are compelling reasons for getting a light or dark colored leather chair or leather couch.  For instance, a light colored swivel barstool or chair would provide an interesting visual contrast to the walls and floor of a dark colored bar room, but that may not be what you want.  The other way to go, of course, is to pick up a similarly colored couch and let it blend in with the room.  Either way you go, this is going to be a long-term investment so choose wisely.

Leather furniture is well known to be long-lasting and quite resilient, and this mostly comes down to the treatment of the leather in the manufacturing process.  A couch that is made out of regular fabric will show wear and tear pretty easily, staining and ripping in short order.  This can be gotten around to a certain extent through reupholstering, but why put yourself through all the pain and expense of such a time intensive process?  Leather chairs are truly an investment no only in sophistication and comfort, but also in convenience.

Leather furniture can used a huge variety of different leathers that result from different materials and manufacturing processes.  Choosing leather furniture can be a tough process, but it will be made considerably easier if you have a working knowledge of the different materials that can be used in these products.  Here’s the rundown on what you can expect to find when you’re shopping around for the perfect leather chair.  Remember, don’t let this stuff overwhelm you!

Vegetable Tanned

This type of leather is created from various materials such as oak tree bark, extracting the tannens which make up the lion’s share of the material.  This type of leather is incredibly malleable, able to be shaped in all kinds of ways when soaked in water.  Additionally, it can be dyed, waxed, or oiled.

Chrome Tanned

This type of leather is far less malleable than the Vege-tanned variety, and therefore it can’t be molded nearly as much.  It is generally far less expensive than other types of leather, and it’s still pretty resilient.

This type of leather material is generally considered the most flexible.  Since it has been tanned in oil, it will feel somewhat slick to the touch.  Not to worry, no oil will actually come off in your hand, but it does lend quite a unique quality to leather chairs that are made out of this material.

Rawhide

You generally won’t find any leather furniture made out of this type of material because it is leather hide in its most basic state before any kind of fancy treatment is applied to it.  It’s generally very stiff to the touch, and becomes quite flexible when soaked in water.

Like I said before, don’t let this stuff overwhelm you.  At the end of the day, the major determining factor in your decision is going to come down to your gut reaction to the piece of furniture in question.  Is it eye-catching or gaudy?  Is the texture nice?  Is it well-reviewed online?  There are plenty of information sources out there that will aid you in buying the perfect leather chair!
